Product Description
Piroxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine (NSAID) that is commonly used in dogs and cats to treat certain malignancies. It's also used to relieve the pain and inflammation that come with osteoarthritis.
Who is Piroxicam, 20 mg Capsule for?
Dogs and cats.
Why use Piroxicam, 20 mg Capsule?
Piroxicam is administered to cats as an anti-inflammatory pain relief medication. In dogs, it is used to treat transitional cell carcinoma (bladder cancer). It can be used to treat fevers and chronic rhinitis in either species.
How does Piroxicam, 20 mg Capsule work?
Piroxicam is an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication) that inhibits non-selective cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes COX-1 and COX-2. It emphasizes prostaglandin presence (a COX-1 product), which protect the gastrointestinal tract and assist the body in fighting hypertension. It also underlines the existence of prostaglandins, which are involved in battling inflammation (produced by COX-2), which can be exacerbated by the presence of certain cancers. Such tumors include: Nasal epithelial tumors Mammary tumors Colorectal tumors Oral squamous cell carcinoma Oral melanoma Prostatic carcinoma Transitional cell bladder carcinoma (TCC) Osteosarcoma

What are the side effects of Piroxicam, 20 mg Capsule?
This medicine, like other NSAIDs, can harm the liver by increasing liver enzymes. Because of piroxicam's effect on blood platelets, blood clotting could be impeded. Piroxicam has the potential to impair kidney function, resulting in a serious kidney damage (papillary necrosis). Stomach ulcers and bleeding, intestinal ulcers and bleeding, black or tarry feces (induced by intestinal hemorrhage), vomiting, inappetence, and peritonitis are all possible side effects of piroxicam (caused by intestinal perforation). These problems can be life-threatening and appear out of nowhere. When piroxicam is used with a corticosteroid (such as cortisone or prednisone), aspirin, or phenylbutazone, the risk of ulcers is increased.
What special precautions are there?
Never give this product to an animal that has had a previous sensitive or allergic response to it. If your animal has a history of bleeding, inflammation, or a ruptured stomach or intestinal lining, don't use this drug. If your pet has hypertension, don't use this drug. Certain other medicines may cause interactions (like ACE inhibitors, diuretics, or enalapril, benazepril, or quinapril). If your pet is on any other drugs, see your veterinarian before using.
