Inject an intravenous dose of 1 gram to 2 grams for every 1,000 pounds of body weight each day. Administer slowly and carefully, limiting treatment to 5 days in a row. When needed, follow with oral dosing of phenylbutazone. For successful treatment: For the initial 48 hours of treatment, a relatively high dose should be administered. From there, you may reduce to maintenance dosage gradually. The lowest possible dose should be used to product the desired response. Typical phenylbutazone treatment response is rapid, occurring within a 24-hour period. If a significant response is not noted after 5 days of treatment, the therapeutic approach and diagnosis should be re-evaluated. Phenylbutazone is mostly metabolized by animals within 8 hours. One third of the daily dose should be administered every 8 hours. As the clinical signs regress, dosage should be reduced. In certain cases, the treatment may be administered only upon re-appearance of symptoms, with no requirement for continued medication. In case of intended long-term treatment, administrating orally is recommended. A variety of chronic conditions are responsive to phenylbutazone. However, discontinuing treatment could result in symptom recurrence.
